Darragh MacAnthony has said on The Hard Truth podcast that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool should have signed Ivan Toney from Brentford instead of Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window.

The Peterborough United chairman believes that Toney would have scored 25 goals for Liverpool in a single season.

The 26-year-old English striker is a former Peterborough player.

Liverpool signed 23-year-old Uruguay international striker Nunez from Benfica in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool told they should have signed Ivan Toney

MacAnthony said on The Hard Truth podcast, as transcribed by The Daily Mail: “Let me ask you the next question. Darwin Nunez, £85 million, Ivan Toney. Who is the better number nine?

“Nunez might have a hell of a career, he might do really well for Liverpool, Liverpool like to be direct – let’s not joke Liverpool are a direct football team, all of our goals come from full-backs and crosses.

“We are a little direct and it suits us, there’s nothing wrong with that. You’re telling me an Ivan Toney in Liverpool’s team wouldn’t score 25 goals with those full-backs delivering. Come off it!”

Flourishing at Brentford

Ivan Toney is flourishing for Brentford in the Premier League at the moment and is banging in the goals for fun.

The English striker has scored five goals and created two assists in six Premier League matches for the Bees so far this season.

Toney scored 12 goals and gave five assists in 32 Premier League starts last season, and scored 33 goals and provided 10 assists in 47 Championship starts in 2020-21.

Now, Toney is a good striker, but you have to trust the Liverpool recruitment team in their decision to bring in Nunez in the summer transfer window.

Yes, the Uruguayan has not been exactly great and has also been sent off this season, but he is a very good striker who could explode for Liverpool in the coming weeks and months.
