Leeds United headed into the match against Reading on Saturday evening with confidence, but they failed to pick up a single point from the encounter.

The Whites went down 1-0 to the Royals at the Madejski Stadium. Yann Kermorgant’s goal in the 21st minute proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan was following the match, and he told BBC Sport: “Leeds improved in the second half but that performance left a lot to be desired. Leeds had loads of possession but didn’t test the keeper enough.

“I think Leeds can be a little too obvious – how about trying midfield runs to test the back four, instead of trying to get the ball to Wood all the time?

“The crosses were poor and didn’t beat the first man. Leeds got into good positions at times but poor balls let them down. They lacked options in the box.”

“This Reading side are just average – if Leeds had lost against Newcastle or Brighton, fine, but Reading are not the kind of team you want to lose like this against,” added Whelan. “It was schoolboy errors that let Leeds down for the goal.”

Over the course of the 90 minutes at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday evening, hosts Reading had 58% of the possession, took eight shots of which two were on target, and earned two corners, according to BBC Sport.

Visitors Leeds had 42% of the possession, took 10 shots of which two were on target, and earned six corners, according to BBC Sport.

The result means that Garry Monk’s side are now fifth in the Championship table at the moment with 69 points from 39 matches.

The West Yorkshire outfit will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Brentford away from home at Griffin Park in the Championship.
