Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has told BT Sport that he cannot understand why Michael Carrick is still part of Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Carrick has been an influential member of the United squad over the past decade, but aside from the 60 minutes he played in the Community Shield, has not played a single minute of competitive football for the Red Devils this term.

Scholes was on punditry duty at Vicarage Road today, and spoke of his bemusement at Carrick’s standing within the team, telling BT Sport:

“As well as Fellaini has done in the first three or four games, I just can’t understand why Michael Carrick’s here. It looked last year like he was leaving, he’s not been involved a minute of the season, so what he’s done I don’t know.”

With the dismal run that United are currently entrenched in, it could be a wise move for Mourinho to recall Carrick to the starting XI.

At 35-years-old, he is obviously in the Twilight of his career, but there are still few better in the league at dictating the pace of a game from a deep-lying position.

Scholes does have a point though, if he was not in Mourinho’s plans, why was he kept at the football club at all?

Next up for United is a trip to Northampton Town on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup followed by a visit from Leicester City in the Premier League.
