Peter Schmeichel and Dwight Yorke celebrate winning the 1999 Champions League
In an exclusive interview with football news platform Omnisport, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel stoked the fire ahead of the Manchester Derby at the weekend, dismissing Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola’s achievements throughout his career, reported via the Independent.
Both clubs have made the perfect start to their Premier League campaigns, taking the maximum nine points from their opening three games, but something has got to give at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is under immense pressure to succeed
Schmeichel spoke to Omnisport, and explained how he believes that Guardiola’s football at Bayern Munich was boring, as quoted by the Independent:
“He was okay at Bayern Munich. I have to say he was okay. For me, personally, he changed a really good, entertaining team to be become more boring to watch.”
Although the former Barcelona boss managed to win the Bundesliga title in every season he spent in Bavaria, he failed to bring home the highly coveted Champions League trophy, which left him open to criticism from fans and pundits alike.
Schmeichel went on to criticise the Spaniard even further, claiming that he got lucky during his time at Barcelona:
Pep Guardiola
“With Pep, he comes in with an incredible reputation. What he did with Barcelona was fantastic, his work was fantastic, but he was also very lucky he had the players to bring in the philosophy that he has in football.”
The Premier League will certainly present Guardiola with the toughest challenge of his career, with as many as seven clubs realistically capable of winning the title.
Great managers thrive from these kind of challenges, however, and if Guardiola can bring domestic and continental success to the Etihad, it will be hard to argue against his standing as one of the all-time great managers.
