Do Tottenham still need Max Meyer? If so, the time to move is now.
Max Meyer’s spell at Schalke is coming to a close after the attacking midfielder rejected the club’s latest contract offer.
Meyer’s deal expires in June and he will be available to leave on a free transfer.
This presents clubs across Europe with an opportunity to sign Meyer for a bargain fee, and one who will undoubtedly be weighing it up are Tottenham.
This is because just 18 months ago Schalke turned down an offer of £33 million Euros for Meyer, a decision which looks extremely poor on the part of the Bundesliga side, BILD reported.
Meyer has not been the same since, struggling for form, but he still presents an absolute bargain in any market.
The 22-year-old has already represented Germany at senior level, but his poor form has seen his World Cup dream slide.
This season he has played as an attacking midfielder through the centre, a spot occupied by Christian Eriksen.
Embarrassingly he has not provided a single assist or scored a single goal, and Tottenham would have to restore his confidence if he is to become a success.
One area Mauricio Pochettino’s side lack, is a deputy for Eriksen, and that’s where Meyer might stand a chance of landing a move to the North London side.
On a free transfer he would certainly be a low risk gamble, but whether Tottenham move will hinge on whether they believe he can re-discover the form and spark which led to them bidding big money for his services.
