Schalke 04 have reportedly joined the race to sign Inter Milan defender Robin Gosens, with Everton and West Ham also keen on the Germany international ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the newly-promoted Bundesliga side have set their sights on Gosens as the former Atalanta star looks set to leave Inter in the coming weeks, with the Nerazzurri already eager to offload the fullback just one year after signing the 28-year-old for a reported £22m.

Despite being one of the best wing-backs in Italy with Atalanta, Gosens’ form has failed to translate over to life at the San Siro, with the defender utterly failing to impress at Inter as a departure from the Serie A giants looks all but certain in the January window.

Whilst Schalke’s interest is the newest, the German side are hardly the only team interested in Gosens, with FC Inter News claiming that Everton have recently made contact to sign the defender whilst Gazzetta dello Sport have previously reported that West Ham also want to sign the Inter outcast.

Indeed, Gosens’ form might have fallen off a cliff since moving to Inter, but there’s no denying that the 28-year-old has the quality to be quite a signing for any top club, yet Schalke’s interest, despite their status, should be of concern for both Everton and West Ham.

Whilst the Premier League duo have the resources and prestige to lure a player like Gosens to England, a return to Germany with Schalke could be appealing to the Inter defender, especially if the Bundesliga side make more additional signings in the January window.

Gosens’ move to Inter has been nothing short of a disaster, with the defender failing to live up to his reputation that was so well-earned at Atalanta. Yet Everton or West Ham could provide a lifeline for the German, one that Schalke could ruin with an ambitious move in January.

After all, the Bundesliga side have the potential to ruin any plans Everton or West Ham have in signing Gosens. And Schalke will be feeling confident in getting a deal done getting that they have nothing to lose in conducting a transfer for the Inter misfit.
