Seth Lugo was hit in the head by a line drive during the Royals’ game against the Rangers on Wednesday night.
The ball came off Brandon Nimmo’s bat at 106.6 mph, according to Ben Verlander, who described the moment as “so scary”.
The incident happened in the top of the fourth inning after Lugo delivered a 3-2 pitch.
The line drive struck Lugo on the forehead area, and Royals medical staff quickly came out to check on him.
Lugo was able to walk off under his own power, but he did not stay in the game. The Royals replaced him with Mason Black as play continued.

Nimmo’s reaction showed the seriousness of the moment immediately after contact.
Verlander wrote that Brandon Nimmo was beside himself after the play, while footage showed players and staff reacting quickly.
The Royals later said Lugo was doing well and would undergo protocol and testing.
That update was encouraging, but the club still had to follow the necessary medical checks after such a direct impact.
Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino also said Lugo had a large knot on his head but was in good spirits.
The most important detail remained Lugo’s condition after he left the mound. He was able to leave without assistance, and the Royals’ update gave a positive early indication while further testing continued.
