Kevin Campbell has shared that Arsenal ‘didn’t have that connection’ like Tottenham have previously had, as he admitted that them reaching the Champions League final in 2019 ‘scared the life out of me’, as he told the Highbury Squad Podcast.

The Arsenal legend spoke about Tottenham previously spending money and getting the ‘team fighting’, which Arsenal didn’t do, but he now thinks they are ‘starting to see that’ with Mikel Arteta’s side.

Whilst Spurs did reach the final of the European Cup a number of years ago, they did suffer a defeat to Liverpool and haven’t recovered since then.

Their North London rivals, on the other hand, have continued to stagnate, with the feeling around Arteta currently mixed.

Campbell shared that Arteta has ‘got rid’ of the so-called Arsenal stars where there was ‘no buy-in’, as he made his Spurs admission.

“How can Chelsea spend money and Man City spend money and they get their team fighting,” said Campbell. “Liverpool spend money, they get their team fighting.

“Even that lot down the road spent money and got their team fighting. They got to a Champions League final. They scared the life out of me.

“But seriously, that absolutely frightened the life out of me? Why? Because we didn’t have it. We didn’t have that connection.

“Now, we are starting to see with Mikel Arteta, that’s why he had to turnover the players because their was no buy-in from the so-called stars, who he got rid of.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how things fare in North London this season because both Spurs and Arsenal are showing mixed signs.

A number of weeks ago, Spurs were sitting top and Arsenal were rock bottom of the table.

But Arteta’s side, albeit still below their neighbours, have started to pick themselves up, whilst Spurs recently suffered three defeats on the bounce, including in the NLD, before their win against Aston Villa.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if, by the end of the campaign, one of Nuno Espirito Santo or Arteta aren’t in a job because the mood around the place goes from one end of the extreme to the other in next to no time.
