Tottenham Hotspur took another step towards shaking off their ‘spineless’ tag on Tuesday.
Gary Neville recently wrote about the “brilliant” job that Mauricio Pochettino has done at Tottenham Hotspur, despite all other distractions. The Argentine manager has kept this Spurs side challenging at the top end of the Premier League, not accepting any kind of regression from his team.
This is an achievement in itself when you consider that Spurs’ transfer activity last summer was non-existent due to the development of their new stadium. However, what is most impressive about the Pochettino-era Tottenham team is their never-say-die attitude.
This was clearly evident again on Tuesday night. 1-0 down with 12 minutes remaining, looking at their Champions League dream disappearing before their eyes, Spurs bounced back.
To be fair, they never gave up. After PSV took the lead, Spurs turned the screw, in the second half especially. They got their reward with two goals from Harry Kane, keeping their hopes of qualification for the knockout stages alive.
Neville recently referred to Spurs’ teams of the last 30 years as “spineless and soft… flaky, rubbish”. While these comments did much to anger former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp it must be said that Neville had a point.
Before Pochettino, Spurs did seem to be there for the taking. Anyone could put it up to them and be in with a chance of taking something from the game. Those days are becoming more of a distant memory for delighted Spurs fans everywhere.
Tottenham’s victory over PSV now means they have two huge group games remaining, with everything to play for. Now is their chance to show just how much mettle they have about them.
