Wolves impressed Premier League fans everywhere in their 1-1 draw away to Arsenal on Sunday.
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo showed us once again that his newly-promoted side are more than capable of holding their own against the big boys in the Premier League.
A 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Sunday was another very positive result for the Molineux team. It could have been even better, in fact.
Arsenal held 79% of the possession but Wolves’ single intent of attacking in a direct fashion is highlighted by their tally of 13 shots, five of those on target.
To go into further depth, Wolves played 291 passes during the game (71% accurately) but enjoyed an xG rating of 1.9 (xG stats courtesy of Understat.com). The Gunners played 733 passes (87% accurately) but had a lower xG rating of 0.97 for the game.
Clearly, Wolves were happy to let Arsenal have the ball and pass it around for a time but then, upon stealing possession, they got forward in numbers and had the most clear-cut chances to win the game. Wolves made 28 interceptions from pressing the Arsenal players. For context, Unai Emery’s team only made seven interceptions.
In true ‘Nuno’ style, Wolves got the ball down and went for the jugular immediately.
As reported from Wolves’ official Twitter account, there has been little in the way of compromise from Nuno and his team after reporters had queried him about whether three wins on the trot would lead to a different tactical approach.
Wolves are at home to Huddersfield Town after the international break. It will be the ideal opportunity for Nuno and his team to get back to winning ways having now gone four games without a victory.
The performance at Arsenal does show they are getting back on the right track, however.
