Juan Mata nets an 83rd-minute winner as the Red Devils edge out Watford at Old Trafford.
Manchester United beat Watford 1-0 at Old Trafford tonight to move level on points with Manchester City in the race for Champions League qualification.
In a topsy-turvy contest which saw both sides miss great chances, Juan Mata was the match-winner when his 83rd-minute free kick proved too good for visiting goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.
But the real hero of the night was arguably Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea, who pulled off a string of truly fine saves to keep out the Hornets tonight.
The Spaniard’s heroics did not go over the heads of Twitter-using United fans, who took a moment to praise the 25-year-old.
It marks United’s second straight Premier League win after humbling Arsenal 3-2 at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday and, more importantly, reinvigorates their top-four bid.
As it stands, Louis van Gaal’s side are just outside the top four on goal difference from Man City, who were thumped 3-0 by Liverpool at Anfield tonight.
However, the Sky Blues have played a game less and will still be favourites to secure the fourth Champions League qualification spot.
