Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson has enjoyed something of a renaissance under Marco Silva’s management this season.
Gylfi Sigurdsson has been named in the Sky Sports Premier League best XI for the season so far. Sigurdsson takes pride of place in this line-up as he is the only player selected who does not play for one of the ‘big six’ of Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Spurs or Arsenal.
Sigurdsson has been in fantastic form for Everton so far under Marco Silva. In his 12 Premier League starts, he has scored five goals and provided two assists as the Toffees have climbed the table in recent weeks after a poor start.
Sigurdsson has been revelling in Silva’s 4-2-3-1 formation as he occupies the ‘number 10’ role just behind Richarlison. With Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes behind him, Sigurdsson has the freedom to focus on the stronger points of his game in Everton’s attacking third.
Having previously served under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City, the Icelandic star is well accustomed to a precise, passing game which Silva is also trying to instil at Goodison Park.
Sigurdsson signed in the summer of 2017 for Everton but was not helped in settling in due to Ronald Koeman’s departure and the management of Sam Allardyce following David Unsworth’s spell as interim Everton boss. He has already scored more league goals after 12 games this season than he managed in the whole of 2017/18.
Everton are currently ninth in the league, just one point behind Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. The Merseyside club will be one of a handful of teams who will fancy their chances of a top-seven league finish this season.
If Sigurdsson continues to perform as he has been, he may well help Everton slip ahead of United for a sixth-place finish.
