Leeds United fans have dismissed the thought of them signing Shane Duffy after surprising rumours emerged about the Brighton defender over the weekend.

Ben White has been the man Leeds fans want to sign after his pretty successful loan spell at the club last season, but it seems the club could turn to his teammate.

The Scottish Daily Mail (16/08, back page) have claimed that Leeds are battling Celtic for Duffy’s signature and the champions of the Championship want the Irishman if they fail to secure White’s signature.

Leeds fans on Twitter have made it pretty clear that they don’t want to sign Duffy for a number of reasons and White is the guy they want to see at Elland Road.

Duffy is a more traditional defender, like Liam Cooper, so it could be argued whilst he would add depth to Marcelo Bielsa’s backline, he wouldn’t add that ball-playing element which White brings to the table.

Plus, if he struggles for regular game time for a Brighton side that now play more from the back under Graham Potter then it has to be questioned why he would suit Leeds.

Duffy has international experience with the Republic of Ireland and he is well aware of what it takes to earn promotion after he did just that with Brighton in 2017.

Added with that, he has played a huge part in the Seagulls maintaining their top-flight status and has with it added Premier League experience to his bank, which would be very useful to Bielsa.

But it’s quite clear that he’s not the player that Leeds need because there is only one Brighton player those fans want to see start alongside Cooper in England’s top-flight.

It does seem as though this transfer saga will drag on and it would come as a huge surprise if it’s Duffy that’s a Leeds player during these coming months, and not White.

Here is a selection of Leeds fans reacting to those Duffy rumours:
