Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing the news that Liverpool are up for sale.
The Athletic reported this week that the Merseyside club were up for sale in news that has sent shockwaves through the footballing world.
This report has very much come from out of nowhere, and Carragher has a theory as to why FSG have decided to sell now.
Indeed, the pundit doesn’t think that it’s too much of a coincidence that Liverpool’s owners have decided to sell the same day that Manchester City once again posted record profits.

FSG selling because of City
Carragher discussed why he thinks FSG may be selling the club.
“I just felt with a lot of American owners coming into the league I thought there was a bit of a power play going on and they could see something that would happen in the future that is maybe going on in American sports,” Carragher said.
“I thought they’d be here for a while. Maybe they’ve woke up this morning and saw the news of how much money Man City have made again commercially and thought ‘well, you can’t stop it can you?’”
Can’t compete
Carragher may be onto something here.
Manchester City’s profits are impossible to compete with when you’re an entity like FSG, and after a decade of battling against these financial behemoths, perhaps the most recent accounts are the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Liverpool have done brilliantly on a smaller budget in recent years, but perhaps FSG now think it’s time for another ownership group to take the Reds in a new direction as the gap between themselves and the state-owned clubs continues to grow.
City’s immense profits may well have persuaded FSG to sell up.
