Robbie Savage thinks Mark Hughes should be the next Southampton manager.
Robbie Savage says that Southampton should name Mark Hughes as their next manager following the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino.
Pellegrino was dismissed nine months after taking the job following the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend – a result which leaves the Saints one point outside the Premier League relegation zone.
Speculation has already started as to who will succeed the Argentine at St Mary’s but Savage, who played under Hughes for Wales and Blackburn Rovers, thinks his old boss should get the job.
“You might think I’m mad but with eight games to go and looking at men who are out of work – it’s Mark Hughes,” the ex-midfielder said on BBC 5 Live Sport.
“He has never been relegated as a Premier League manager.
“He played for Southampton, and he will want to prove Stoke wrong. He has lots of experience.”
Hughes did indeed spend two years with the Hampshire club towards the end of his playing career before moving into management and also being in charge at Manchester City, Fulham and QPR.
The 54-year-old’s most recent managerial post was at Stoke City, a position from which the Welshman was sacked on January 6 with the Potteries in the relegation zone and having just been knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two’s Coventry City.
