The Premier League leaders have been inconsistent in Europe in recent seasons, and were seemingly labouring to a draw with a team ranked 13th in La Liga.
With David Silva and Sergio Aguero missing through injury, former footballer Robbie Savage, and ex-City midfielder Joey Barton both took to Twitter to bemoan the way the side looked without the duo.
Yet their dismissive of City’s chances without the star players (and what side in the world would not miss a pairing like Aguero and Silva?) was blown up by the late impact from big money signing Kevin de Bruyne.
The Belgian did exactly what he was bought to do, make a difference and decide games, scoring his fifth goal in nine appearances since joining from Wolfsburg.
Both Savage and Barton backtracked somewhat, appearing to cheer the City winner.
City fans know all about late goals at The Etihad, although there was no league trophy to be presented after this one. Instead, they can take satisfaction from moving three points clear of the third placed team in their group, and just behind leaders Juventus – and from proving their critics wrong, that with players like De Bruyne in the side, they are far from ordinary.
