Leeds United's Luke Ayling applaud the fans after the match

Luke Ayling’s form has been a prominent debate for Leeds United fans of late, with many of the opinion that the defender should be dropped. Now, the Leeds star will be looking over his shoulder more than ever.

Ayling, 27, missed seven Championship matches earlier this season due to injury, and since returning to action in the 3-2 win over Aston Villa, he has been far from his normal self.

His form even saw Marcelo Bielsa come out to defend the right-back, who cost Leeds just £750,000 (Mail) back in the summer of 2016. He has since clocked up 100 Leeds appearances in all competitions.

The likes of Jamie Shackleton have been discussed, while some fans are still bemoaning their side’s decision not to sign a new right-sided defender or consider recalling Lewie Coyle from his loan at Fleetwood Town.

Now, Ayling has even more pressure on his shoulders to perform against Bolton on Saturday, after Bielsa confirmed utility man Stuart Dallas has returned to the squad following foot and ankle problems.

Dallas, also 27, suffered a foot injury after the 1-0 win over Sheffield United and though he was close to a return in January, he suffered a further ankle injury during his recovery. But he is finally fit enough to return to action.

Northern Ireland international Dallas is a player admired by Bielsa given his ability to play in different positions. Indeed, prior to his injury, the £1.3million signing (Sky Sports) started and finished the previous six matches at right-back.

A source of criticism for fans in previous seasons, Dallas had won over the majority of the Elland Road faithful with his efforts on the right side of the defence and his injury came at the worst possible time.

That form will remain fresh in Bielsa’s mind and Ayling seriously has to improve his displays – starting with Bolton – if he is to remain the club’s first-choice right-back.
