Everton should go back in for Arsenal’s Theo Walcott in January.
With no goals and no assists in his first eight games for Everton, it’s proving a difficult start for summer signing Sandro Ramirez.
The former Barcelona talent was one of the more exciting players to join Everton this past summer after scoring 14 times for Malaga last season – and the fact he only cost £5 million prompted suggestions that the Toffees had pulled off a bargain.
But it’s safe to say that it hasn’t worked out for the Spaniard just yet, though there is a long way to go before anybody can label him a flop and keep a straight face.
However, you wonder whether Everton should have hedged their bets and jumped at the chance to sign Arsenal’s Theo Walcott when he was reportedly available.
The Sun reported in July that the Goodison Park side were willing to pay £30 million for the 28-year-old attacker, which seemed a lot of money at the time but if Gylfi Sigurdsson is worth £45 million then Walcott is probably worth it.
The long-time Arsenal man isn’t a world beater by any means but he is quite a decent goalscorer and Everton – who have scored a dismal four goals in seven Premier League games – need one of them badly.
Walcott, who has three goals in three starts for the Gunners this season, has the intelligence and pace to stretch an opposition defence in ways which Sandro cannot and, crucially, he has the know-how when it comes to scoring goals.
The former Southampton youth hit 14 Premier League goals in 24 starts during the 2012-13 campaign – 21 in total that season – and perhaps Everton boss Ronald Koeman should enquiry to see if he’s still available come January.
