The Tottenham Hotspur defender could have ended up playing in Serie A instead.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has disclosed that manager Mauricio Pochettino convinced him to join the club last summer despite interest from Serie A sides.
Sanchez has featured prominently since joining Tottenham for a club record £42 million fee from Ajax last summer, but admitted that he could easily have ended up playing in Italy instead.
As reported by Football.London, Sanchez said: “The first person I spoke with was Pochettino. I had chances to go to Italy but Mauricio convinced me, he’s very direct.
“He believes that a good central defender must dominate and not forget the game when my team attacks. To be alive throughout the game.”
Strong physically and composed in possession, Sanchez is a talented player, and the 21-year-old will surely improve further under the guidance of Pochettino.
There are some aspects of Sanchez’s game which require improvement, especially his tendency to make rash challenges at times, but the initial signs have certainly been very encouraging.
Sanchez will hope to help his side to silverware in his first season at Tottenham, with Pochettino’s side still active in both the FA Cup and the Champions League, while they are also aiming to secure a top four finish in the Premier League.
Tottenham were left frustrated last weekend as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Southampton and know that they can ill afford to drop many points in the remainder of the Premier League season if they are to get into next season’s Champions League.
