The San Antonio Spurs’ offseason has seen an unexpected development as fan-favorite announcer Jacob Tobey is leaving the franchise after a personal controversy.
Tobey has been the voice of the Spurs since joining the team in 2024 as their lead play-by-play announcer.
However, a bizarre development on social media involving his personal life and the sister of a Spurs player has seemingly cost him his job.

Front Office Sports has revealed that Tobey has been let go by the Spurs after allegations that he was involved with Loren Waters, the sister of Spurs bench guard Lindy Waters III.
“Jacob Tobey is out as the Spurs’ lead play-by-play announcer after his girlfriend accused him on social media of cheating on her with the sister of a player on the team, sources told Front Office Sports.”
An Instagram story was shared on Tobey’s account on July 7, likely by his girlfriend, with a photo of him and her and a caption that claimed he cheated on her with Waters.
Waters III averaged 2.4 points with the Spurs and isn’t currently signed to their roster for next season.
His NBA future is unclear, but it’s assumed Tobey’s alleged indiscretion took place while Lindy was a part of the franchise, although he has no role to play in this situation.
Tobey was considered one of the rising stars in the sports media world and was in a prime position to become a household name as the voice of the Spurs, the franchise that just went to the NBA Finals and is led by the presumed next face of the NBA: Victor Wembanyama.
Tobey has previously served in play-by-play roles for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.
His talent should bring him back into similar roles in the future, but the Spurs have presumably drawn a hard line on the consequences of such employee fraternization in the future, especially if they have a negative PR splash-back on the franchise.
Tobey’s departure will make the lead play-by-play job in San Antonio among the most prized sports broadcasting jobs in the world, given the trajectory of the franchise.
Fans will eagerly wait to see who replaces Tobey after a memorable two-year stint, which has ended in unceremonious circumstances.
