Serie A club Sampdoria are determined to sign Luciano Vietto this summer from Atletico Madrid.
They have had a €16 million (£14.56 million) bid for the attacking midfielder rejected already, but are ready to come up with another bid.
According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, the next offer from Sampdoria could be around €20 million (£18.20 million). The club are trying to agree a deal with the player before reaching an agreement with the Rojiblancos.
The news should ring warning bells for Southampton who are reportedly interested in signing the former Villarreal midfielder.
The Sun (printed edition; August 11 page 61) linked Southampton with a £13.5 million bid for Vietto, but the Premier League club may have to offer more to lure the Argentine away from La Liga. And they must act quickly.
Vietto joined Atletico after enjoying a superb 2014/15 campaign with the Yellow Submarines where he scored 20 goals in all competitions.
He struggled to replicate his form for Atletico, and managed just one goal in La Liga from 19 appearances.
Vietto spent the last season on loan at Sevilla where he scored 10 goals in all competitions.
The Argentine is a brilliant footballer who is most effective playing behind the striker role. He has pace and possesses excellent technical abilities.
He would be a fantastic addition to the Southampton squad, but the Saints need to move quickly to secure his signature.
