Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan hit a nerve with Gunners’ former number eight this weekend, provoking him into a series of angry responses.
Have you ever heard the following phrase?
‘Don’t argue with an idiot, an idiot will drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.’
It is exactly why professional footballers should not engage with wind-up merchants like Arsenal fan Piers Morgan.
This weekend was undoubtedly a chastening one for Samir Nasri, seeing his replacement Mikel Arteta almost end his hopes of a title, but his unsavourably Twitter spat with arguably the most disliked football fan in the world has not helped his image one bit.
Nasri had been on the end of taunts from Morgan, and several Gooners, after originally saying he left the club to win trophies, and looking like he will end the season with none.
Sure it must have hurt, but he should have just risen above it.
He just ended up looking foolish.
After all, in recent months he had been quite complimentary towards his former club, commenting in February that he still supports Arsenal and wishes manager Arsene Wenger well, even visiting the Emirates a month earlier to witness Thierry Henry’s comeback first hand.
In his Twitter argument with Morgan yesterday, Nasri damaged his already fragile image with Arsenal fans, by insulting them through expressing confidence that no trophies would be arriving at the Emirates any time soon.
Now he has entered a petty bet with the America-based talkshow host over who will win a trophy first and may eventually prove his point.
But he comes out of it looking 10 times more ridiculous than he would have done than had he just kept a diplomatic silence, and erased any small pocket of goodwill towards him at the Emirates, while also drawing attention to his ‘mixed’ start to life at the Etihad.
He has only served to increase his notoriety- and become even more hated by Arsenal fans, and at a time when the continued off-field actions of Mario Balotelli have disrupted City’s squad, the last thing Roberto Mancini will want to see is his £24 million signing bickering on Twitter with a celebrity.
