Ian Wright has stated that the career path of Tottenham transfer target, Tyrick Mitchell, is a ‘great story’ and similar to Raheem Sterling’s, as he told ITV Sport.

Brought up in Brent in north-west London, the Crystal Palace defender grew up a stone’s throw away from Wembley, just like Manchester City and England star, Sterling.

Mitchell recently made his England debut and he will be hoping that his recent rise into the Crystal Palace first-team results in more caps for his country.

That spotlight also brings added pressure and more eyes on the prize, with Mitchell now a transfer target for Tottenham, West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City.

It’s a credit to the 22-year-old, who was part of a Brentford academy that was shutdown in 2016, for finding a home at Selhurst Park and making a name for himself after that setback.

Wright would have come through the same kind of pathway as Mitchell and he was full of praise for the flying fullback.

“It is a great story,” said Wright. “The fact that he has focused on his football with everything that is going on around him.

“It’s a familiar story. We have heard it so many times. We have heard the same with Raheem Sterling.

“What this does is it shows that if you can see it, then you can achieve it. That’s what it comes down to. When they were younger, a lot of black players didn’t have that.

“But we are now seeing it in abundance and it’s fantastic.”

Palace are an ever-progressing side and their recent FA Cup semi-final visit is proof that Patrick Vieira is doing a very good job.

From a defensive style under Roy Hodgson to one that is easy on the eye and more forward-thinking under the legendary midfielder.

Even if other teams knock for Mitchell’s talents in the summer, those in the Palace boardroom simply have to knock back any offers.

Compared to last season, Mitchell has improved his game to a much higher level and that will only continue if he stays on in Palace colours.
