Sheffield Wednesday signed Sam Winnall from Barnsley in the January transfer window.
Sam Winnall has admitted to the Sheffield Telegraph that his time at Sheffield Wednesday has been frustrating so far.
Winnall was signed by Wednesday from Barnsley during the January transfer window, but he has failed to force his way into Carlos Carvalhal’s starting line-up in a regular basis.
The likes of Steven Fletcher, Jordan Rhodes and Gary Hooper all seem to be ahead of Winnall in the pecking order at Hillsborough.
However, the 26-year-old striker is hoping that his goal in Wednesday’s last match of the season against Fulham has given Carvalhal food for thought ahead of the play offs.
“It has been a frustrating time not being in the squad and not playing,” Winnall said.
“But the gaffer gave me a chance and I’d like to think that I took it a little bit in scoring a goal and putting in a good shift. Hopefully, that puts me in contention for the play-offs.”
Winnall has earned credit from Owls fans for his tireless work rate, but his lack of goals has become of some concern.
The previously prolific scorer netted just two goals in his first 13 appearances for Wednesday, which knocked him out of contention.
Winnall has not even been in Wednesday’s match day squad for four matches of their last five matches, but finally got a chance against Fulham and he seized it by scoring.
The first leg of Wednesday’s play off semi final against Huddersfield Town is due to take place on Sunday.
