Wolves won their FA Cup fourth-round replay but the Shrews boss says Ivan Cavaleiro’s goal should have been ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
Speaking after their FA Cup 3-2 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town boss Sam Ricketts expressed his dismay towards a goal he felt should have been ruled out.
The Shrews sealed a fourth-round replay against Wolves by drawing 2-2 in the original tie last month, the Premier League side needing an injury-time equaliser not to be knocked out, and at Molineux, the League One strugglers once again breached their opponents’ goal twice.
Matt Doherty opened the scoring after just two minutes played, firing home from close range, before James Bolton and Josh Laurent struck back to have the Shrews on the verge of a half-time lead, only for Doherty to draw his side level deep into first-half injury time.
The second half was not as emphatic on the goal front but the winner for Wolves came just after the hour when Ivan Cavaleiro made a run into the box, lost two opposition defenders and duly tucked the ball away as Ricketts demanded a VAR review for a foul in the build-up to no avail.
Ricketts, who captained Wolves to the League One title in 2014, spoke after the 3-2 defeat and said he was proud of his side but felt Cavaleiro’s goal should have been ruled out.
“It’s a clear foul,” he is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying at full time in the West Midlands. “You can’t put two arms around my player’s waist, pull him out of the way and push him to one side.
“It’s a foul. I’ve not seen what VAR saw and their angles, but it’s a foul. I saw it from my angles and it’s a foul so that disappoints me more than anything. If we’re going to have video technology, let’s get it right.”
