Naomi Osaka stunned fans with her outfit at the 2026 Australian Open.

Walking on the court for her first-round match against Antonia Ruzic, Osaka wore a veil, an umbrella, and a hat.

It was certainly an iconic entrance, although her extravagance nearly backfired.

Osaka only just scraped by world number 65 Ruzic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Saving herself from embarrassment, Osaka got to enjoy the win, as tennis fans around the world shared their thoughts on her outfit choice.

Weighing in on the debate, former Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey gave his verdict.

Sam Querrey ‘actually liked’ Naomi Osaka’s outfit

During the latest episode of ‘Something Major‘, Querrey had this to say about Osaka’s outfit.

“I actually liked it, I don’t know why,” he said.

“I actually liked it, and because of the entrance onto [Rod] Laver [Arena], now it looks like it’s an actual runway model, but it was nuts like the hat with the butterfly.

“She didn’t have her rackets, everyone was like where is it?

“She won… You’ve got to win that match!”

Querrey’s co-host John Isner also shared his thoughts.

“She looks like, what is that character from Mortal Kombat, radar or something,” he said.

“Raiden (laughs),” Querrey replied.

“Luckily, she won, so we are probably going to see it again in two days.”

Steve Johnson is expecting something new from Osaka.

“We are going to see something new,” he predicted.

Only time will tell if Osaka will wow fans with a ‘new’ outfit for her second-round match…

Who will Naomi Osaka play in round two?

Next up for Osaka is Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea.

The 35-year-old won her first-round match in three sets against Germany’s Eva Lys.

Osaka and Cirstea have met once before, but that was 11 years ago.

In 2015, Cirstea defeated Osaka in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying.

This time around, the Japanese star will be the favorite to advance.

If she does make her way through to the third round, she could meet either Maddison Inglis or Laura Siegemund.

Then, in the fourth round, Osaka could play six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.

Osaka won’t want to get ahead of herself thinking about the third or fourth round yet, though, and will be fully aware of the task at hand.

She will play Cirstea in the second round of the 2026 Australian Open on Thursday, January 22.
