West Ham United want to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, but they could potentially face competition from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, according to The Express.

What’s the story?

The Express have reported that West Ham are ‘still keen’ on a deal for West Brom goalkeeper Johnstone despite being on the verge of signing former Rangers goalkeeper Brian Kinnear on a free transfer.

The Hammers are also exploring the possibility of signing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

However, West Ham could face competition from Arsenal for Johnstone.

That’s because, according to the report, the Gunners are looking at the 28-year-old England international as a cheaper alternative to Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Good signing for West Ham?

West Brom got relegated from the Premier League last season, but Johnstone did well for the Baggies.

The 28-year-old made important and key saves over the course of the campaign and impressed former Tottenham Hotspur star Glenn Hoddle, who described him as “brilliant” and “a top goalkeeper” on Rio Ferdinand Presents Live in May 2021.

Johnstone is 28 now and is at the top of his game.

West Brom are likely to sell the goalkeeper as they will play in the Championship next season.

The Englishman would be a very good signing for West Ham, not just for now, but in the long run as well.
