Aston Villa look set to be in the Championship play off spots at the end of the campaign.

Sam Johnstone has told the Guardian that he wants to settle at Aston Villa, but his future could depend on them getting promoted.

Johnstone is currently contracted to Manchester United, but has been at Villa for the last 18 months.

Steve Bruce has made no secret of his desire to snap up the 25-year-old stopper on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

However, Johnstone has suggested that the claret and blues may need to get promoted to keep him.

“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster,” Johnstone said.

“It’s been fun getting games in and getting different experiences but I’m 25 now and ready to settle. Hopefully Villa get promoted and we’ll take things from there.”

Villa look to have missed out on their chance of claiming an automatic promotion spot, which will leave them having to go through the lottery of the play offs.

The claret and blues have won just one of their last five matches, which puts them under pressure to start turning their form around.

If Villa were to miss out on signing Johnstone on a permanent deal, it would be a major blow for Bruce’s side.

Johnstone has become very popular at Villa Park during his time there, and would be an excellent addition on a permanent basis.
