The Owls are currently sixth in the Championship with nine games to go.
Sam Hutchinson has conceded that Sheffield Wednesday will probably reflect on their season as something of a failure if they are unable to finish in the Championship play-off places, the Sheffield Star reports.
Despite not beginning the season as one of the favourites to be in contention for promotion to the Premier League, Carlos Carvalhal’s men are currently sixth in the table with just nine games to go.
And while the 26-year-old would suggest that the team have gone through plenty of changes this season, and thus, need time to gel, he was fairly certain when asked whether falling out of the top six now would mean that the campaign would be deemed a failure.
“Probably. We have been in there, amongst it, and it would be ours to lose,” he told the Star.
“But we have recruited so many people, and the club has changed so much.
“Since I have been here, a year and a half, the club has changed so much. The infrastructure, what the chairman is trying to do, it’s amazing. I think it’s only going one way.”
While Wednesday currently occupy one of those coveted spots in the top six, their position is still very precarious, even at this later stage of the season. Both Cardiff and Ipswich are within one point while Birmingham have the opportunity to close the gap to just a solitary point as they boast a game in hand over the other sides.
And while the Owls’ run before their most recent game may have led some to believe that they were going to choke – as they failed to win in five consecutive games – their performance against Nottingham Forest last time out confirmed that they are still very much the team to catch.
