Sam Homewood shared some insight into his memorable run-ins with Sir Alex Ferguson from his time working as a presenter for Manchester United’s club media.
As both a fan and a presenter, many people would call it the dream job. Homewood wouldn’t disagree, but he still gets a kick out of hearing it. Even after all these years, there’s something special about being reminded of how lucky he is.
We recently sat down to talk about what that’s been like and how strange that feeling can be. Sometimes when he’s on site at Carrington, walking through those same halls he once saw in documentaries as a kid, it still doesn’t feel real. But according to Homewood, that feeling has never really gone away.
Even now, standing near where legends like Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes used to give interviews on the news was surreal for him at first. It’s even more so today because he’s actually part of those conversations himself.
The most interesting part of our chat came when Sam started talking about his interactions with Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson Stories: Sam Homewood shares his experiences

Having spent several years around Manchester United, Sam Homewood has crossed paths with Sir Alex Ferguson on more than a few occasions.
Ferguson had already stepped down by the time Homewood joined MUTV, but his presence around Old Trafford hasn’t faded. He’s still very much part of the fabric there.
Homewood shared a story where Ferguson critiqued his podcast questions, jokingly calling them ‘rubbish’—something that Homewood considers a career highlight.
Speaking to United In Focus, Homewood said: “The best time was when we were playing Leicester, and I got to Old Trafford really early. I just sat in the stand because I love being in the stadium when it’s empty before anything starts.
“I’m just sitting there. And then, over the corner of my eye, I turn and just standing there is Sir Alex Ferguson, and he’s doing an interview with BBC Sport.
“They’re taking some pictures of him, but while they’re sorting stuff out, he’s just standing there, and I’m just looking at him. And then he catches my eye, and then he’s looking at me. And then, naturally you would look away in that instance.
“You would just like go because that’s what you’re supposed to do. But I couldn’t not look at him. It was like this beam of golden light and I just stared at it.And eventually he acknowledged this is happening because it just got weird. It’s just me staring at him.And he goes he looks at me says you ask some ridiculous questions in that podcast.”
Sam Homewood on sharing the mic with Sir Alex Ferguson
Homewood was part of the panel when Ferguson joined the official United podcast, and it turned into a lengthy chat that stretched well over two hours.
It quickly became clear that it wasn’t just another episode. For Homewood, it was an experience that stood out from the rest.
He went on to say: “We did a two-hour podcast with him.
“We sat down and just chatted. The podcast itself is really fun, but the joy of, and the build-up to it where you’re just sat and you’re talking, and you’re waiting for it. And then when you’re finished and you just sort of talking to it, oh yeah, that was interesting. Oh, that was funny, so I hadn’t heard that before, et cetera. And you’re just talking, it was brilliant.
“Then a few times because I’d be like moving around Old Trafford with someone like Wes Brown, you just see him. And then Wes will stop to say hello, and you just sort of end up in the conversation.”
