Sam Gallagher’s failed Wolves move looking costly amid Birmingham City struggles

Sam Gallagher’s loan spell at Birmingham City from Southampton could be cut short – leading the striker to wonder what might have been at Wolves.

Considering the huge convoy of clubs on the trail of Southampton striker Sam Gallagher in the summer, the 22-year-old has done little to justify why he was one of the summer’s most in-demand players in the opening weeks of this season.

Gallagher has tallied just one goal in nine games since joining Birmingham City on a season-long loan. And according to the Sun on Sunday (29^th October, page 65), the targetman is now considering his future as speculation grows that he could cut his loan spell in the Midlands short.

Gallagher is understood to be earning £40,000-a-week at a Birmingham side who find themselves one place and two points above the Championship relegation zone. The Blues have hardly looked like the promotion-pushing side they were tipped to become after an eye-catching recruitment drive over the summer.

What could’ve been?

As a result, Gallagher’s failure to get a move to Midland rivals Wolves in the summer instead is looking increasingly costly. The Express and Star reported that Wolves wanted to sign Gallagher on a permanent basis after he scored 11 times for a relegated Blackburn Rovers side on loan last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, however, were put off by Southampton’s £13 million asking price. Though with goals and starts proving hard to come by at Birmingham, and his future on the South Coast looking uncertain, Gallagher may be wondering just how different his fortunes would be if he was wearing the gold of Wolves.

Despite a 2-1 defeat to QPR on Sunday, Wolves are still second in the table and bonafide contenders for promotion back to the Premier League. If there’s one position they could have done with strengthening, however, it’s up front with Leo Bonatini the club’s only senior centre-forward.

It almost goes without saying that Gallagher would probably have enjoyed a far more productive season so far profiting from the service of Diego Jota and co at Molineux.
