West Bromwich Albion’s 18-year-old midfielder Sam Field has been speaking to the Express and Star about his slip away from Tony Pulis’ team sheet over the last couple of games.
The England Under-19 man made his debut last season on the final day of the season, and with the club struggling to secure their transfer targets in the central midfield department, Field started against Middlesbrough and Bournemouth.
But recent fixtures have seen Field out of the side, failing to make an appearance in the win over West Ham or the draw with Stoke City.

Field admitted he wasn’t happy to miss out on minutes, but paid credit to manager Tony Pulis for doing it in his best interests, as the Welshman looks to avoid burning out his starlet.
“Obviously I was a little bit disappointed because I wanted to play,” the youngster is quoted as saying in the Express and Star. “But the gaffer is doing it for a reason.
“He’s managing me long-term and I thank him for that. I’m a young lad. To be 18 and disappointed not to be starting for the first team, something must be right.

“Hopefully, I’ll come back later in the season and kick on from where I left off and just keep doing what I was doing.”
The midfielder is one of a number of hugely talented youngsters that have come through the academy in recent years, and there is little doubt that it will only be a matter of time until Field is back in or around the starting line up again, and this time for a more permanent role in the senior squad.
Field’s words are also encouraging for a club that has been trying to move on from the disappointment of Saido Berahino’s last couple of years at the club, with the striker seen one the Baggies’ top prospects in decades yet pushing in a direction that has been to the benefit of no one – especially the football club.
