Teenager Sam Dalby now has a slither of hope that he might too get his chance.
Dalby impressed under Marcelo Bielsa in pre-season, scoring in the friendly under York City.
He then followed that up with four goals in two games for the under-23s at the start of August.
Dalby signed for Leeds in January from Leyton Orient, where he made 19 first team appearances.
He has become Leeds main goalscoring threat along with Ryan Edmondson at under-23 level.
Edmondson has already made his Leeds first team debut at the end of last season.
Dalby is one year older and can’t be ruled out of the reckoning if Leeds require a striker in the short-term.
Prior to this the task of breaking into the team seemed largely impossible.
Now he at least has a chance if he can put together a seriously strong run of form for the under-23s.
Bamford will be back in late December and January, so Dalby along with Edmondson and Roberts must make the next few months count.
