Brighton striker Sam Baldock believes the club have great competition for places, speaking to The Argus.

Chris Hughton’s side have enjoyed a strong start to the Championship, recording 21 points so far as they sit in fourth place behind Newcastle, Norwich and Huddersfield, and Baldock believes they have a lot of quality in the squad.

“We have got two quality players, at least, for every position,” Baldock told The Argus.

“The competition for places is really high and the manager has shown previously that, even after a victory, he is not afraid to change the team around.”

The 27-year-old scored in Brighton’s last game, netting the opener in the Seagulls 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, but knows his position is not safe in the side just because he got on the score sheet.

A deep squad is essential to a successful Championship game, with a treacherous schedule meaning teams are playing twice a week almost every week for the full season, so rotation is important.

Brighton came narrowly close to promotion last season, slipping up on the final day at Middlesbrough and subsequently losing in the playoffs, meaning they would be spending another year in the second flight of English football.

However, there has been no hangover for Hughton, whose team are showing they are capable of mounting another challenge for promotion to the Premier League with a bigger squad available to them.
