Sam Allardyce showed exactly why he isn’t the right man for Everton over the long-term, with his planned substitutions against Watford yesterday.

Allardyce was preparing Morgan Schneiderlin to come on to the field at 0-0, with the Frenchman set to replace Gylfi Sigurdsson in Everton’s line-up.

With the scores deadlocked, Allardyce appeared to be keen to take his point and shut up shop.

Sam Allardyce, Manager of Everton looks dejected during the Premier League match between Watford and Everton at Vicarage Road on February 24, 2018 in Watford, England.

He was going to replace one of the Toffees’ most integral creators, to bring on a more defensive-minded midfielder, and that lack of ambition shows why Everton shouldn’t be keeping him on.

Schneiderlin actually never got to come on, as Everton fell 1-0 down just before he due to be brought on, and Allardyce was forced into more attacking substitutes.

However, the fact Allardyce appeared happy to settle for a point at Vicarage Road is baffling.

If Everton really do want to make progress, they need a manager who is prepared to risk a draw for a victory against struggling sides such as Watford.

The Toffees are destined to finish in mid-table this season, so quite why Allardyce wasn’t going all out for all three points is very questionable.

And Allardyce simply seems too stuck in his defensive mentality to really be able to take Everton to the next level.
