Everton have improved drastically under new management following Koeman’s sacking in October.

Sam Allardyce looks on from the stand during the Premier League match between Everton and West Ham United at Goodison Park on November 29, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Toffees boss Sam Allardyce will be desperate to strengthen his squad at Goodison Park in January, as he looks to guide his side to a top seven finish in the Premier League table.

One particular area of concern for the 63-year-old will be the left-back position, and he told reporters that he might very well be looking to bolster his options in that department in January, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo:

“When Leighton comes back we only really have one recognised and registered left-back in the squad. That might be an area I’ll want to consider strengthening if that’s at all possible in the January window.”

Having just one senior left-back in a Premier League squad really does constitute poor planning, and Allardyce’s predecessor Ronald Koeman must take the blame.

The Dutchman failed to identify left-back as an area that needed strengthening during a summer when England international Kieran Gibbs was readily available, and it could turn out to be a decision that goes on to haunt the Blues this season.

The 28-year-old eventually joined West Brom from Arsenal, for a fee believed to be in the region of just £7 million, but he would have been ideal competition for Leighton Baines in the left-back role at Everton.

Allardyce will obviously be looking to rectify the mistake made by Koeman in not providing cover for the 33-year-old, but his job could have been made so much simpler, had the Dutchman not neglected a key part of his playing squad.
