Will Sam Allardyce renew interest in Thomas Vermaelen at Everton, having been linked with bringing him to West Ham?

Thomas Vermaelen of FC Barcelona looks on during a training session ahead of their UEFA Champions Leage round of 16 second leg match against Arsenal FC at Ciutat Esportiva on March 15,...

Ashley Williams’ recent return to form at Everton has quietened their need to sign another centre-back in January, but if the situation changes then one short-term option could be Thomas Vermaelen.

Vermaelen was linked with a move to Everton in the summer, with Talksport reporting the La Liga giants were unwilling to let him go without a replacement lined up.

It is not just Everton who have recently been linked to Vermaelen, but new boss Sam Allardyce.

Sam Allardyce looks on from the stand during the Premier League match between Everton and West Ham United at Goodison Park on November 29, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

The Independent reported in 2014 that Allardyce admitted he wanted to sign the centre-back who described as ‘quality’, while he was still at Arsenal.

Now armed with a bigger transfer budget at Everton, he could yet get his man if the Toffees submit an early offer and give Barcelona plenty of time to sign a defender of their own.

Thomas Vermaelen of Belgium looks on during the international friendly match between Belgium and Japan held at Jan Breydel Stadium on November 14, 2017 in Brugge, Belgium.

Vermaelen has made only two La Liga starts this season, playing 198 minutes of league football.

He is used to the Premier League from his time captaining Arsenal, with the big question being his fitness.

As a squad player the Belgian international could be a very useful player for the Toffees, and his chances of first team football can’t be worse than they currently are at the Nou Camp.
