Monaco have become every neutral’s favourite team this season. With their attacking style and young talented players such as Kyllian Mbappe, Benjamin Mendy and Thomas Lemar it is easy to see why.

Another of their top players this season has been Djibril Sidibe. The summer signing from Lille has been in fine form and recently scored his first goal for France in a 3-1 win v England.

It could have been a far different campaign for the player, and perhaps Sunderland, if he had headed to the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats were very keen on signing the player last summer. Sam Allardyce was the manager at Sunderland at the time and according to the Chronicle he was very keen on bringing in the player last summer to strengthen the full-back positions.

Big Sam however left to take up the England manager position and Sidibe headed to Monaco. Meanwhile, David Moyes signed the likes of Javier Manquillo and Donald Love – both of whom failed to impress as Sunderland finished bottom of the Premier League table.

Now the Frenchman is being linked with a big-money move with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham keen. Sunderland missed out on a real gem.
