Everton’s Davy Klaassen has struggled this season.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce has told The Mirror that he would like to see midfielder Davy Klaassen leave the club on loan before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

The Toffees splashed the cash on a host of signings over the summer, and one of Ronald Koeman’s main signings was midfielder Klaassen, luring him from Ajax in a deal worth £23.6million (BBC Sport).

Klaassen, 24, came up through the ranks with Ajax and even captained the Amsterdam club, becoming a hero with the Dutch side having racked up 55 goals in 181 games.

Everton fans were understandably excited about the prospect of a goalscoring midfielder heading to Goodison Park, but it’s fair to say that Klaassen hasn’t come anywhere close to fulfilling expectations.

Klaassen hasn’t registered a goal or an assist for Everton, hasn’t played in the Premier League since September, and has just seven starts in all competitions to his name this season.

The Dutchman hasn’t featured under Sam Allardyce at all in the Premier League, and there have been whispers that the midfielder could move on during this month’s transfer window.

Now, Allardyce has told The Mirror that he thinks Klaassen would be better moving out on loan before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, and he needs to play football rather than fight for his place at Everton.

Allardyce didn’t shut the door on Klaassen’s Everton career though, suggesting that he could return and be an important player next season after a full pre-season and some playing time behind him.

“Because he has never appeared on the subs bench it would be better benefit for him and the club if he moved on just on loan,” said Allardyce. “He is quite willing to sit and stay and fight for his place but at this moment he is better going out and playing some football. I think that would benefit him and give him the opportunity to play.”

“Maybe next season he might be good enough. You look how many players don’t make it in their first season from abroad. There are hundreds and hundreds of them. And at every club. Given a full pre-season and then you wait and see,” he added.
