Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron.

Atlanta's Miguel Almiron (10) settles the ball during the MLS Cup between the Portland Timbers and Atlanta United FC on December 8th, 2018 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.

Sam Allardyce has admitted that he is surprised that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is spending big on Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron.

BBC Sport claim that the 24-year-old midfielder is set to move to St James’ Park in a club-record fee and will undergo a medical on Tyneside.

Rafa Benitez’s side are yet to sign a player during this January transfer window and will be looking for fresh faces in their bid to stay in the Premier League.

Former Sunderland manager Allardyce commented on the reported arrival of Almiron as he warned that he may take a while to adjust to his new surroundings in England.

“Yes, I am [surprised Ashley is spending £20m],” Allardyce told the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on 30/01/2019. “It’s a big ask at this stage of the season. They have gone for a big name and a big signing at £20m.

“Of course in January, it is a massive gamble. No matter how much research you have done and how good the player is. It could be a while before he settles in. You are hoping, he hits the ground running.”

Newcastle haven’t broken their transfer record fee since paying £16 million for the now-retired Michael Owen in 2005 when he made the switch from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Nonetheless, if the reported deal for Almiron does go through then it will be a big boost to the club, who recorded a much-needed win against champions Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Despite falling behind to an early Sergio Augero strike, the Magpies hit back through Salomon Rondon before Matt Ritchie netted from the spot late in the second half.

It remains to be seen whose place Almiron takes in the Newcastle starting XI, with his ability to play across the front three, but more than likely he could be deployed in behind the striker.
