Sam Allardyce stunned by how open West Ham United’s defence is

West Ham United have conceded 17 goals in their opening nine Premier League matches.

Sam Allardyce has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 27th October, that he was left stunned by how open a game West Ham United played in their last Premier League match.

West Ham were humiliated in front of their own fans, when they took on Brighton & Hove Albion a week ago today.

And Allardyce feels that West Ham’s problems have stemmed from them not offering their defence enough protection.

“I put it down to individual errors which are occurring far too often,” Allardyce said.

“The team has a great flair about it going forward, but they don’t have defensive solidarity. I don’t see the form players getting behind the ball and protecting the back four. They play an extremely open game and the defence on its own doesn’t seem to be able to keep the opposition out.

“I watch the Brighton game and I was stunned by the lack of defensive quality of the team.”

West Ham have conceded 17 goals in their first nine Premier League matches, and currently sit in 16th place in the top flight standings.

The Hammers have, at least, gained some momentum going into their huge game with Crystal Palace at the weekend.

West Ham came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup in midweek, which showed their battling qualities.

The Hammers will need to continue to show fight at the weekend, when they take on Palace in a match which already looks vital for both side’s seasons.

Palace are currently bottom of the Premier League table, and will be determined to pick up three points against West Ham to ensure they do not get cut adrift.
