Sam Allardyce stance on Cenk Tosun makes sense

Cenk Tosun joined Everton in the January transfer window.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce has suggested to The Liverpool Echo that Cenk Tosun will not start until and unless the team are safe from relegation.

The Toffees won against Crystal Palace at the weekend, but the Merseyside outfit are still in danger of getting relegated from the Premier League to the Championship at the end of the season.

Tosun has struggled for playing time since his move to Everton from Besiktas in the January transfer window for a fee reported by The Liverpool Echo to be worth £27 million.

The Turkey international forward has featured in three Premier League matches, playing a total of 143 minutes of league football in the process, according to WhoScored.

Allardyce told The Liverpool Echo about Tosun: “He is struggling with the pace of the Premier League which happens to more players than it doesn’t to who come in in January.

“There are more that struggle than actually succeed. As time goes on and the more we get closer to our safety the more we can release and see what he’s got.”

Controversial but sensible stance

Allardyce’s comments are controversial. After all, Everton have been crying out for a striker who can score goals in the first half of the season, and now that they have a spent a reported £27m on one, why isn’t the manager making use of him?

However, Allardyce’s stance is understandable and makes sense. If Tosun is struggling with the pace of the Premier League, then it would not do his confidence any good if he is thrown into the starting lineup and he fails.

For the Turkish forward to be a success in the long run, it is important that he gets used to the rigours of the Premier League.
