Sam Allardyce offers update on Everton’s attempts to sign a left back

Everton need a left back, but may not actually sign one before the transfer deadline.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce has told the Liverpool Echo that the club may be unable to bring in a new left back before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

The Toffees have added two new faces to their squad this month, as Allardyce brought in attackers Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott from Besiktas and Arsenal respectively.

With almost £50million spent on those two attackers, Everton have backed Allardyce this month, but fans have been desperate for one more addition.

Whilst a centre back or a central midfielder have been mentioned as potential targets, Everton need a left back more than anything else, and fans have expected that situation to be resolved this month.

Leighton Baines is ageing and struggling with injuries, Luke Garbutt wasn’t even registered for the Premier League squad, and Brendan Galloway has struggled out on loan at Sunderland.

Right-footed Cuco Martina has been forced to play at left back as a result, and his poor performances mean that Everton fans have been expecting a new left back to arrive.

However, with 48 hours to go until the deadline, Everton are yet to even make a concrete move for a left back, and manager Allardyce has admitted that a deal may not happen after all.

Allardyce has told the Liverpool Echo that Everton have looked at a number of left backs, but are struggling to find one to bring in, as they are either unavailable or not good enough for Everton.

“We have looked at many left-backs and obviously we can’t find the right left-back that we’re looking for,” said Allardyce. “There’s obviously a great shortage of quality players throughout the world who can play in the Premier League, I don’t have any doubts about that – so to try and find one in this window means that you would be taking a gamble. The ones who are available, and there aren’t that many, are mostly what other teams don’t want.”

“So you have to pay a lot of money for a player somebody doesn’t want to sell – and that is a great difficulty in this window, to look for a left-sided player, a left-footed full-back, which is obviously one of the positions we are light in. Our balance is not very good because we don’t have anybody like that apart from Bainesy,” he added.
