Bolasie played the full match against Liverpool, while McCarthy was on the pitch for 86 minutes.
The pair are both only just returning from injury, and Allardyce admits that ideally he would have taken them off sooner.
“I did not want to keep them [Bolasie and McCarthy] on the pitch for that long,” said Allardyce.
“As soon as I saw James was starting to stretch his calves he had to come off, but he did a brilliant job. And Yannick was worn out. I think he needed to go in an oxygen tent because he actually did far, far too much compared to what he really should have done.
“But, hopefully, that will get him up to speed quicker than we expected and James, hopefully, can have a run of games and stay fit.”
Everton scored their goal against Liverpool through Gylfi Sigurdsson, but it was not enough.
The Reds had taken the lead through James Milner from the penalty spot, before Virgil Van Dijk headed home the winner.
Everton’s starting line-up at Anfield proved that Allardyce was taking the competition seriously, but it seems that the Toffees will now have to focus on their Premier League form.
Everton are next in action on Saturday, when they take on Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur side at Wembley.
