Liverpool did not make any major moves in the January transfer window, choosing to stick with their current squad rather than bring in new senior players.

They did reach an agreement for Jeremy Jacquet, but the young defender will remain with Rennes until the end of the season.

Jacquet featured in a recent 3-0 loss to Marseille in the French Cup, and supporters will have to wait a bit longer before seeing him at Anfield.

While Jamie Redknapp is a fan of the Frenchman, it is worth noting that he was not Liverpool’s top defensive target heading into next season.

The club had earlier made a move for Marc Guehi over the summer, but Crystal Palace rejected their approach.

There were fresh links to Guehi as the January transfer window approached, with Arsenal also said to be interested in the England international.

Many expected him to stay at Selhurst Park for the rest of the season before leaving on a free transfer from July 1.

But instead, Guehi made a move to Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth £20m, while Liverpool did not make any additions.

“Marc Guehi is different class. I mean, he’s the best of the best,” said Allardyce this week on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast when discussing the defender.

Liverpool’s missed opportunity with Marc Guehi

Guehi will probably be in the line-up when Liverpool take on Manchester City this Sunday.

The former Crystal Palace man has become a regular under Pep Guardiola, while the Reds could be left short at the back unless Joe Gomez is fit in time to play alongside Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

That has left some supporters questioning why Liverpool did not make a stronger push to bring Guehi in, especially with City moving quickly to get a deal done.

After the move, it came out that Liverpool did not see good value in the overall cost of bringing him in.

Guehi is reportedly on £300,000 per week at City, which adds up to around £85.8m over five and a half years.
