Everton signed Cenk Tosun from Besiktas during the January transfer window.
Sam Allardyce said that he wanted to be judged on his first signing at Everton, but he may be regretting those comments now.
Allardyce’s first addition at Goodison Park was Cenk Tosun, but the striker has not had the impact expected.
Tosun has struggled to adapt to English football, after arriving from Besiktas.
And Allardyce may now be seriously wishing he didn’t ask to be judged on his first signing.
“That first player has to have a real impact at Everton Football Club to prove to everybody that we are going in the right direction with recruitment,” Allardyce told the Liverpool Echo, quickly after arriving at Everton.
“I put that money into that player but if that player doesn’t deliver [people will say]: ‘Look at that player, look at the money he’s wasted on him, oh he’s bought him, he’s rubbish, what a waste of money’.
“So I’m knackered then, the fans don’t trust me, the board doesn’t trust me and so my first signing is absolutely critical.”
If Allardyce is being judged by his first signing, then it would rather sum up how he has performed at Everton so far.
The former England boss has failed to win over the crowd at Goodison Park, and could be set for a swift exit.
According to reports in Fotomac, Tosun could also be about to move on from Everton rapidly.
Tosun has been linked with a switch back to Besiktas, which would cap off what has been a miserable time at Everton so far.
