Sam Allardyce has told the Liverpool Echo that if he remains in charge at Everton any signing he makes will have to be immediately ready to break into their first-team.

Allardyce has already admitted that he is planning to have a clear out at Goodison Park over the summer.

And to make sure that he does not bloat the squad again, Allardyce only wants quality additions made.

“We need to sign players for the first-team, not the squad,” Allardyce said.

“We don’t need too many but we need one or two to make us better. Whether we get to those levels in difficult circumstances – with the World Cup – it’ll be hard to do.”

Whether Allardyce will have the freedom to make the transfers he is planning at Everton remains to be seen.

The ex-England boss’s future at Goodison Park is still far from secure, with many Everton fans calling for him to go at the end of the season.

Allardyce has achieved his aim of keeping Everton in the Premier League, but he has still faced criticism from sections of the Goodison Park crowd.

Everton’s brand of football has failed to provide the supporters with much entertainment, and the calls for change are only growing louder, with the campaign edging closer to its climax.
