Sam Allardyce was Everton manager last season and he has spoken about Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Sam Allardyce has hinted that Everton could have potentially signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last January but admitted that he was always going to cost ‘too much money’ for the club.
The 29-year-old moved to Arsenal in January 2018 after making a £56 million switch from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund, as reported by BBC Sport.
Allardyce, who was in the Goodison Park dugout last season, was asked about whether the club could have signed the high-flying Arsenal man prior to his switch to London.
“We didn’t really know whether it was definitely a yes or not,” Allardyce told The Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on talkSPORT. “Probably not, the rumour was that he wanted to come to the Premier League and is desperate to come.
“Whether that would have happened, we never got that far but it was always going to be too much money for January for us because of what they [Everton’s previous managers] had spent previously to me arriving.”
Ronald Koeman was sacked as Everton manager in November and replaced by former England boss Allardyce, who ended up guiding them to a top-eight finish.
During his time at the Merseyside club, they signed Theo Walcott from Arsenal and Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, both were on the bench for Everton’s defeat at Southampton over the weekend.
Nonetheless, since his move to the Premier League, Aubameyang has not stopped scoring as he has netted an impressive 14 goals from his 23 league matches this season.
Overall, he has found the back of the net on 24 occasions from his 36 league games as he will be looking to be England’s top marksman at the end of this campaign.
