Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe warms up before the match
Sam Allardyce has confirmed that he would be interested in signing his former player, Jermain Defoe, in the summer.
Defoe, who played under Allardyce at Sunderland, will be in demand in the summer transfer window. Allardyce has insisted that if Defoe is available in the market, he will be interested in signing him.
“If we are safe and Jermain Defoe is available, and he wants to come to Crystal Palace, I would be interested,” said Allardyce, as quoted by The Standard.

“Until that time, when we are safe, I can’t pursue that. When we are safe, someone else who is already safe may already have done it. Who knows?”
Sunderland are expected to undergo a massive rebuilding process in the summer following their relegation from the Premier League.
The Black Cats are already saddled with a massive debt, and they are powerless to prevent their star players from leaving the club.
David Moyes has more or less confirmed that Defoe will leave the club.
“Jermain has a clause in his contract so it is possible [that he will leave in the summer], but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is under contract,” he said, as quoted by the BBC:
According to reports from The Telegraph, Defoe has a clause in his contract where he can join another club on a free transfer if Sunderland get relegated. That means, Palace have a great chance of signing Defoe for free.
At 34, Defoe is still going strong. The former Tottenham striker has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this season in 32 games, and needless to say he is still good enough to perform at the top level.
