Sam Allardyce has told the Guardian that Gylfi Sigurdsson is going to play more centrally for Everton.

Sigurdsson has been generally used as a left-winger at Everton since Allardyce took charge, and he has not thrived in the position.

The Icelandic international is not blessed with great pace, and he has always looked at his best when playing as a number 10.

With Everton increasing their options down the flanks, following the signing of Theo Walcott, Allardyce is now looking to try Sigurdsson back in a more central role.

He said: “For me, Gylfi has been trudging away outside on the left side, so play him in the position he wants to play and see what he can do.”

Sigurdsson played behind the striker in Everton’s last match, which came against West Bromwich Albion, but he wasn’t at his best.

Everton struggled for form against West Brom, and relied on Oumar Niasse’s goal to rescue a point for them.

Allardyce’s honeymoon period at Goodison Park is well and truly over now, with Everton struggling for results recently.

The Toffees are currently in ninth place in the Premier League table, but Allardyce has admitted that he doesn’t feel his side are totally clear of relegation yet.
